Set up in 2001, the .NAME domain extension is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained online.
