SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to connect to a web server and perform various tasks using a command line. The protocol is popular with many expert users, as the info transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access can be employed for a lot of things with regards to the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is among the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the hosting server allows it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for pretty much anything - you can install software or restart specific services like the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used mainly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that allow you to employ the protocol if your laptop or computer is working with a different OS as well. The connection is created on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though a number of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Shared Website Hosting

SSH access is available with all shared website hosting which we provide. With some of them, it's provided as standard, while with others it is an additional upgrade you can include with a few mouse clicks from your website hosting CP. You may get SSH access through the section dedicated to it where you shall also find the info which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You will be able to choose the password that you shall use and, if required, you will be able to change it with several clicks from the same place. All of the commands that can be used with our shared packages are listed within a help article along with relevant examples. If the SSH access feature is enabled for your account, you shall also be able to upload files using your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is included by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you will be able to include it via the hosting Control Panel if needed - even just for the current month. In any case, you can activate and de-activate the feature with just one click via the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same place, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you may type the password which you want to use, since it does not need to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better security, you may also change it as much as you require. The full list of the commands which can be performed within a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and a couple of examples. An extra feature after SSH access is activated will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Hosting

If you obtain a new virtual private server from our company, it shall provide full root access and you will be able to connect to the server and to handle everything through an SSH console. The feature comes as standard with all plans, so you shall not need to enable or upgrade anything. Your web server shall be set up right after you purchase it and as soon as you receive the Welcome e-mail with the login information, you can connect through the server’s main IP address and start working. As the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is separated from the other accounts on the physical machine, there won't be any restrictions with regards to the commands you can use. You'll have full root access, so that you may set up and run any application that can work on a Linux web server, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot the whole machine or any software running on it.
